So I missed the fight last weekend ... of course.  Whats the deal ... Pelligrino got whooped huh, did he look like he got way too high or what?  And whats the deal with Carwin, looked like he got at least a couple of good punches in there.  Is Lesnar really badass?!

Doesnt matter ... Velasquez is on a vision quest.  He is going to get there, and when he does I believe he will have the power to stay there.  Unless Brock cheats and rubs some sort of vision blocker in his eyes during the fight ... like in all the boxing/fighting movies.

Dude, I'm done doubting Lesnar. I seriously thought that diverticulitis was going to be the end of him, but he stormed back and won that fight fair and square. I think Velasquez is a great athlete, but no way is he going to beat Brock. That belt is his for at least another year and a half.

What impressed me most was Chris Leben vs. Akiyama. To begin with, I don't think Akiyama belongs in the middleweights, but the fact that he took some of Leben's best and gave good account of himself, only losing through carelessness in the last minutes of that fight, coupled with the fact that Leben took that fight after a tough test against A Train is a testament to the fact that both dudes totally belong in the UFC. I can't wait to see Akiyama fight Bisping.

As for Pellegrino, going into that fight, I didn't know anyone who picked him to beat Sotiropuolos. George is a contender, plain and simple. I think the lightweight division represents some of the absolute best fighters, and I can easily foresee a period of that belt changing hands multiple times. Only LHW has it beat in terms of competitiveness.

UFC 117 ... great show!  I almost never get to see these fights until they come out on DVD which is usually like 3 - 6 months after the fact.  But last saturday night the stars aligned for me and I was lucky enough to catch 117 live.  What a great night of fights!  I enjoyed all of them, which seems like a bit of a rarity these days.  Although I dont know why, with all the talent in that organization every event should be stacked with proper fights like this last one.

Had not seen much of Roy Nelson in action, only read about him.  Junior Dos Santos, however, I knew was an absolute badass.  I must say though, even with the loss ... I have a new found respect for Big Country.  I cannot remember seeing anyone take those kind of punches to the head and still keep pushing forward (well at least since the Cabbage days) ... very impressed.

It was so fucking great to see a little bit of the older style Jon Fitch back in action.  He was such a freak when he first came into the UFC but ever since getting his face smashed for 5 rounds by GSP ... he has just not been the same.  Finally it seems like he is getting back in touch with his inner animal again ... yet hopefully this time with a little more understanding of how to harness that power and put it to good use.  True ... Alves did not look very healthy at all, but hey ... best out of 3,  Alves lost the first two ... I gotta say I think Fitch has definitely proved his dominance over him at this point and I cant wait to see a Rematch with GSP.  And yes I said GSP because I just do not see Kos pulling off a win over GSP in their next bout.  Never ever liked Koscheck, but I do have to admit I have been nothing but impressed with his fights and dedication over the past couple of years ...  but out of that whole camp I really feel like Fitch is the only one with a true shot at handling GSP.

What can I say about that Main bout.  WOW!  Sonnen finally figured out how to get past the hype of the Spider.  Watching Silva scramble on the ground helpless for 4 and half rounds was extremely enjoyable.  I love the guy, but it was nice to see someone point out his weakness and then toy with it for 20 min.  Heartbreaking to see Chael run out of gas in the last 2 min. and as soon as he did Anderson capitalized.  One of the greatest fights I have seen in a very long time.  A fight that actually lived up to its hype and more ...

I hope the UFC really looks back on this fight card and learns something.  There is a way to make every event turn out this good.  Oh and how cool was it to see Matt Hughes come in and beat up a young guy for a change.  He just needed to to get rid of that 'Old guy' mentality and quit being so stuck in his ways.  Looks like he is learning some new tricks ... I guess you really can teach an old dog ... nice!  ;-)

I just think he has Gracie's students' number.

Great card - a little sad Big Country didn't pull off the win, but have to agree with Joe Rogan. He was in survival mode the last two rounds and better conditioning might have helped him with that, but I'm guessing he'll never do that. Wonder if the loser of Mir/Nogueira is in the cards for him...

Once again Stephan Struve pulled off the most impressive win of the night - the prelude to the Silva come from behind win. Dude was getting beat badly and knocked his opponent out cold.

Can't wait for Penn/Edgar 2... with the bonus of seeing James Toney in a cage. I know he hasn't much of a chance against Couture, but I'll still be rooting for him anyway.

Indeed ... Ill tell ya what though ... James Toney has been boxing his whole life with those big ass boxing gloves.  Put those little UFC gloves on some hands like that, and im thinking if he actually catches Couture with either hand ... that will probably be enough to put Randy into permanent retirement.  Its kind of like BJJ dudes practicing with a gi so when they get out there with out one they are 10 times faster.

If Toney ends up on the ground though ... it will probably be enough to put himself into permanent retirement.  Interesting match up ... Boxing VS MMA like it has never been shown before.  One of those old bastards is retiring after this one though ...

On the other note ... think this Huerta vid will be enough to get him back in the pro fight game?  It was a shame to see such a good fighter let a couple of losses take him out like that.

Huerta still fights for Bellator. He lost his last match.
